Gifts For Mama

By James Gilbert Pynn

Who doesn't love Mama? Well, the second Sunday in May is reserved for that special lady, you know, the one who gave birth to you. The trials and travails your mother had to endure to get you to where you are today are certainly worth one day out of your life. Take the time to tell or show her how much her sacrifices have meant to you.

The first observance of the day was May 13, 1877, and since then, Mother's Day has become associated with gift giving, brunch, and a general "day off" for mothers in the United States and Canada alike. After all, Canadians love their mothers too. Though it is a legislated day, by act of Congress, the origins of Mothers Day may be found in the Catholic observance of "Mothering Sunday."

Take her to brunch, spend the day with her -- if you can't stand her, take her to a movie. The bottom line is, visit your mother or give her a call at the very least. It will make her day, ironically. A small trinket of your appreciation would be a nice touch.

A national Mother's Day was born at the turn of the 19th Century, culminating in the Mothers Day Proclamation. The Proclamation is at heart a pacifist manifesto, intend of respecting the rights of all people to live without violence and fear. According to local legend, Juliet Calhoun Blakeley, on that May 13, 1877, stepped up to the pulpit to encourage a temperance movement. Just like a mother to insist we not drink too much.

So, celebrate that special day with that special woman. The typical Mother's Day gifts will do, of course, but for those of you from larger families, try sending a group gift. This allows you to pitch in towards a very special gift, like say, a Coach purse, or Armani shirt. Mom will always love what you get her, but how about knocking her socks off with a $1000 gift you only had to pitch a $100 towards?

Your usual Mother's Day gifts will always be cherished, but try something more expensive and better this year. Mother's Day gifts can be as extravagant as a Coach bag or even a new iPhone.
